U.S. State Department to Launch Pilot Program for Domestic Visa Renewals
The U.S. State Department is planning to launch a pilot program that would allow H-1B specialty occupation workers and other temporary visa holders to renew their visas in the U.S. The State Department will start with H and L visa holders and could eventually expand the program to include other visas.
Currently, workers under the H and L program are required to travel abroad to renew their visas, which is often challenging, especially with the post pandemic backlog and most visa posts. The domestic renewal option will reduce the workload of consular offices abroad and benefit both workers and employers. The domestic processing option does not require new regulations, but it involves setting up a new consular division in Washington, DC.
