P2 Visa: Reciprocal Exchange Program for Performers

What is a P2 Visa

The P2 Visa is a U.S. non-immigrant visa that allows individual artists or entertainers, or groups to perform under a reciprocal exchange program between U.S. organizations and foreign entities. It is specifically designed for cultural exchange and mutual sharing of artistic talents between the U.S. and other countries.

This visa is commonly used by musicians, actors, dancers, and performers participating in reciprocal agreements, such as those between the American Federation of Musicians and foreign artist unions.

P2 Visa Requirements

To be eligible for a P2 Visa, the following must apply:

  • The artist or entertainer must be part of a reciprocal exchange program recognized by USCIS.

  • The program must be between a U.S. organization and a foreign organization, with evidence of mutual exchange of artists or entertainers.

  • The applicant must have skills comparable to those of U.S. performers taking part in the exchange abroad.

  • A U.S. sponsor, employer, or labor organization must file the petition.

  • Include documentation such as:

    • Exchange agreement details.

    • Proof of artistic ability or performance history.

    • Support letters from labor unions or relevant organizations.

P2 Visa Process

  1. File Form I-129 with USCIS

    • A U.S. employer, sponsoring agent, or labor organization must file Form I-129, Petition for a Nonimmigrant Worker.

    • Include:

      • A written reciprocal exchange agreement.

      • A consultation letter from a relevant labor organization.

      • Evidence of professional qualifications and event itinerary.

  2. USCIS Petition Approval

    • If USCIS approves the petition, they issue Form I-797 (Approval Notice).

  3. Visa Application at U.S. Embassy/Consulate

    • The applicant fills out Form DS-160 (online visa application).

    • Schedule a visa interview and bring:

      • Passport

      • DS-160 confirmation

      • Form I-797 approval

      • Supporting documents

  4. Attend Interview and Wait for Visa Decision

    • Once approved, the visa is issued, allowing entry into the U.S. for performance.

P2 Visa Processing Time

  • USCIS Petition Processing:

    • Regular: 2 to 6 months

    • Premium Processing: 15 calendar days (for an extra fee)

  • Consular Processing:

    • Visa interview appointment and processing can take 1 to 4 weeks, depending on location and caseload.

Total Timeframe: Usually 2 to 8 weeks with premium processing, or 3 to 6+ months with standard processing.
