What is R1 Visa
The R1 Visa is a U.S. non-immigrant visa designed for religious workers. It allows ministers and individuals working in a religious vocation or occupation to enter the U.S. temporarily to work for a non-profit religious organization. This visa is commonly used by missionaries, pastors, monks, religious instructors, and others in similar roles.
R1 Visa Requirements
To qualify for an R1 Visa:

The applicant must be a member of a recognized religious denomination for at least 2 years before applying.

The employer must be a non-profit religious organization in the U.S. or a religious affiliate of such an organization.

The applicant must be coming to the U.S. to work at least 20 hours per week in a religious capacity (minister, religious professional, etc.).

The position must not be primarily administrative or support-based unless it is directly tied to the religious function.

The sponsoring organization must provide evidence of its non-profit status and religious nature.
R1 Visa Process
The R1 Visa process includes the following steps:

The sponsoring religious organization files Form I-129 with USCIS on behalf of the religious worker.

Submit documentation verifying:

The organization’s non-profit and religious status.

The applicant’s qualifications and religious affiliation.

The nature of the job and duties.

USCIS may conduct a site visit to verify the legitimacy of the employer.

If approved, the applicant completes Form DS-160 and schedules a visa interview at a U.S. embassy or consulate.

Attend the visa interview and submit the required documents.
R1 Visa Processing Time

USCIS Petition Review: Typically 6 to 9 months, due to required site visits and additional scrutiny.

Premium Processing: Available only after a successful site visit, with a 15-day response time.

Embassy Processing: Usually a few weeks after USCIS approval.

Total Timeframe: Around 6 to 12 months, depending on USCIS and embassy timelines.
The R1 Visa is generally granted for an initial period of up to 30 months, with a possible extension of another 30 months, for a total maximum stay of 5 years.
