TN NAFTA Workers: Canadian and Mexican Professionals Visa
What is TN Visa
The TN Visa is a U.S. non-immigrant visa created under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) (formerly NAFTA). It allows qualified Canadian and Mexican citizens to work in the U.S. temporarily in pre-approved professional occupations, such as engineers, scientists, accountants, nurses, and teachers. It is ideal for cross-border employment and is employer-specific.
TN Visa Requirements
To qualify for a TN Visa, the applicant must:
-
Be a citizen of Canada or Mexico (permanent residents are not eligible).
-
Have a job offer in the U.S. for a position listed in the USMCA’s approved professions list.
-
Meet the specific educational and/or licensing requirements for that profession (usually a bachelor’s degree or higher).
-
Intend to work in the U.S. temporarily (not seeking permanent residence through this visa).
-
Have a U.S. employer willing to sponsor and provide detailed employment information.

Once the visa is issued, enter the U.S. to begin work.
TN Visa Processing Time

Change of Status or Extension (via USCIS): Takes 2 to 6 months.
