What Is the Difference Between a K-1 and Fiancé Visa?
There is no difference — the terms “K-1 visa” and “fiancé visa” refer to the same visa.
The K-1 visa is the official name for the visa that allows a foreign fiancé(e) (Philippines & Canada) of a U.S. citizen to enter the United States to get married within 90 days of arrival. It’s commonly called the fiancé visa because it is specifically for engaged couples.
In short:
- K-1 Visa = the technical, official name used by immigration authorities.
- Fiancé Visa = the everyday, casual term people use to describe the same visa.
Once married, the foreign spouse can then apply for a green card (permanent residency) through a process called Adjustment of Status.
