What Is the Minimum Income to Sponsor a Spouse?
The minimum income to sponsor a spouse for a U.S. green card depends on the federal poverty guidelines and household size. As of 2024, the sponsor generally must earn at least 125% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL). For a household of two people (the sponsor and the spouse), this means an income of approximately $24,650 per year in the 48 contiguous states. In Alaska and Hawaii, the thresholds are slightly higher due to cost-of-living differences.
If the sponsor does not meet this income requirement alone, they may use:
- A joint sponsor (who meets the income requirements),
- Certain assets (such as savings or property),
- Or the intending immigrant’s income, if applicable.
These financial requirements are verified through Form I-864 (Affidavit of Support).
