What Is the Meaning of the Removal of Conditions?

The removal of conditions is the process by which a person with a conditional green card—usually valid for 2 years—applies to become a permanent green card holder with full rights for 10 years. This mainly applies to individuals who obtained their green card through marriage to a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and need to prove that the marriage is genuine and not entered into for immigration purposes. To remove these conditions, they must file Form I-751 within 90 days before the conditional green card expires. Once approved, the individual becomes a lawful permanent resident without conditions.
